Imagine being a dog. You’re being beat up by your owner, and have had no water or food for the past year. In fact, approximately 6.5 million animals undergo animal abuse each year, 3.3 million which are dogs, and 3 million are cats. 10,000 dogs die from being forced to fight against each other every year. According to these facts, a lot of problems are caused with animal abuse. How can an app be made to reduce any animal abuse done to dogs? What is animal cruelty? When someone doesn’t care for an animal responsibly, this is called animal cruelty. Not giving a shelter like food and water is against the law. To be cruel to or harm animals is also against the law(PAWS, 2018, para.1). It is illegal to attend an animal fighting event, to use laboratories for vertebrate animal testing and put animals to death from testing. It is also illegal to force or make an animal to be tormented, killed, beaten, or mutilated, or to fail to notify the owner or police after striking a dog or cat with a motor vehicle(MSPCA, 2018). This is what animal cruelty is, and the rules of animal cruelty. There are many different types of animal cruelty. According to the Humane Society of the United States, 70.1% of animal cruelty involve dogs, 20.9% of animal cruelty involves cats, and 24.1% involve other animals. There are two main types of animal cruelty. Direct violence is one type, and signs include open wounds, multiple scars, limping around, or difficulty walking. Neglect is the other type, and neglect signs include injuries or illnesses that are untreated, poor living conditions, extreme skinniness, and extremely poor growing(Josh Weiss-Roessler, 2015, para 3). There are many subtopics of animal cruelty. There are seven main small subtopics. Cockfighting is a bloodsport that forces binds to fight for the entertainment and/or profit of spectators and greyhound racing is a cruel and senseless ‘sport’ that kills or injuries thousands of dogs every year across the country. Farm animal welfare is when billions of animals are being raised on crowded, inhumane factory farms, where not enough food and water is provided. Horse slaughter is the practice of killing horses for human consumption. Dog fighting is a bloodsport when dogs are forced to fight against each other, where money is placed over the health of the dogs. Puppy mills are a large-scale breeding facility where profit is placed above the well-being of animals, and animal hoarding occurs when an individual houses more animals than he or she can care for, leading to animal neglect(ASPCA, 2016, para 2). These are the types of animal cruelty. Now, what are the signs of cruelty? If an animal has a tight collar that has caused a neck wound or has become embedded in the pet’s neck, has open wounds, or has untreated skin conditions that have caused loss of hair, scaly skin, bumps or rashes, this is a sign of animal cruelty. Extreme thinness or emaciation as bones may be visible, fur infested with fleas, ticks, or other parasites, or patches of bumpy, scaly skin rashes are also signs of animal cruelty. Signs of inadequate grooming, such as an extreme matting of fur, sharp and overgrown nails, dirty coat or an animal seen limping, weak, or cannot stand and/or walk normally, this is also a sign of animal cruelty. When an owner hits or slaps an animal, this is a sign of animal cruelty, or when an animal looks confused or drowsy, this is a sign of animal cruelty (ASPCA, 2015, para 7). These are the main signs for telling animal cruelty. There are many ways that animals are killed through animal abuse. What are some of the ways? Many greyhounds die each year before they get close to a racetrack. Many don’t even make it to age 4 or 5. Puppy mills have many puppies living one area, resulting in animal neglect. The dogs in puppy mills usually get sick with kidney or heart illnesses as the puppies cannot thrive through the harsh conditions they are put through. 90% of broiler chickens, which are chickens used to make meat, have trouble walking. In the 1860s, dog fighting was used in the military (after the Civil War) and was entertainment for police officers and fireman. In urban, suburban, and rural places over the world, dog fighting has been noticed and reported. In China, several dogs and cats are bled to death or skinned alive to gain the skin from the animals. Over 50% of the fur in the US comes from China. An estimated 250,000 animals fall victim to 900-2000 new cases of animal hoarding in the US(Dosomething, 2015, para. 2). These are some of the reasons that people worldwide do animal abuse.Animal cruelty is bad, but how should people worldwide solve it? Teaching a lot of people how pets should be treated how they shouldn’t be treated, and teaching children how to handle pets safely and interact properly, will help solve this problem. When you run into an animal cruelty problem, there are several things not to do. First, don’t touch. Humans might get hurt by trying to save an animal from animal cruelty. Even if humans are disappointed or want to jump in, jumping in the situation will make matters even worse. Secondly, get an adult. Get a trusted teacher, parent, neighbor, or guardian. Tell them what was seen, and the guardian will help solve the situation.Call for help. When animal cruelty is seen, immediately dial 911 or call the local animal control(PAWS, n.d, para. 3). This is what to do when animal cruelty is experienced or occurs.Animal cruelty has proven to be dangerous and life-killing. With so many animals in the world, it is hard to monitor and make sure that animal cruelty isn’t occurring. Animal cruelty cannot be monitored all over the world full time, but it may be reduced. With over 6.5 million animals undergoing animal cruelty each year, it is clear that the number is overwhelming and must decrease in some way. Creating an app for people to report animal cruelty is a solution. Or an app to remind pet owners that their pet needs to be fed or given water is a solution. This research will be used to create an app for people around the world.
