A washing machine is a
device used to wash laundry. The term is mostly applied
to machines that use water as opposed to dry
cleaning  or ultrasonic cleaners. Laundry
detergent is added to the wash water, and is sold in either liquid or
powdered form.

Top-loading:

In this design the clothes placed
in a vertically mounted perforated basket which is contained within a
water-retaining tub, with a finned water-pumping agitator in the centre of the
bottom of the basket. At the top of the machine the clothes are loaded, which
is usually but not always covered with a hinged door. The outer tub is filled
with the water during the wash cycle which is sufficient to fully immerse and
suspend the clothes freely in the basket. The agitator moves and pushes the
water outward between the paddles towards the edge in the tub. The water moves
outward, towards the center, up the sides of the basket and then down towards
the agitator to repeat the process, in a circular pattern similar to the shape
of a torus. The agitator direction is reversed periodically, because continuous motion in one direction would just lead to the water
spinning around the basket with the agitator rather than the water being pumped
in the torus-shaped motion. The action of a front-loading washing machine is
suitable to a motor capable of reversing direction; a universal motor is less
efficient, noisier, doesn’t last so long.

Front-loading:

The dominant design in Europe is the front loading washer.
Most industrial and commercial washers around the world are of front loading
design. The inner basket and the outer tub are mounted horizontally and the
clothes are loaded at the door at the front of the machine. The door contains
of a transparent window. The cylinder is rotated back and forth and agitation
is supplied. The paddles lift the clothes by the inside wall of the drum and it
is dropped down. The water and detergent solution are forced through the weave
of the fabric. Because the wash action does not require the clothing be freely suspended
in water, only enough water is needed to moisten the fabric. Front-loaders use
less soap, less water and the repeated dropping and folding action of the
tumbling can easily produce large amounts of foam or suds.

Variant
and hybrid designs:

The two
general designs have many variations. In Asia the top loading washing machines
use impellers instead of agitators. The top loading and front loading machines
are more are less similar; they have a drum rotating around the horizontal
axis, in the top load the door is at the top of the machine with a liftable lid.
After the clothes are loaded the lid is closed and the machine operates and
spins like the front loader. They are taller than front loaders and narrower
and have a lower capacity and are used where there is narrow space. They are
combo washer dryer machines that combine both the washing cycle and drying
cycle in the same drum. These are very useful for overnight cleaning but heavy
loads cannot be washed. These machines are largely used in Europe because they
can be fitted in smaller spaces.

India
Washing Machine Market Overview 2016-2022:

The goods which
yield utility over a longer period of time are called consumer goods. They are
classified into three types: brown goods, white goods and consumer electronics.
White goods include products such as washing machine, air conditioners,
refrigerators, audio equipments and speakers. In India the penetration of
washing machine is around 9% and may increase in the coming years with the
sales from rural India. During monsoon season the demand for washing machine
increases and there is a greater need among metro and urban consumers. The
washing machine industry is still some distance from the inflexion points
unlike of the refrigerators. Nowadays players are trying to influence
penetration of the washing machines with heavy marketing campaigns and many new
launches. The growing disposable income of products and easy financing options
have led to shortened replacement cycles whereas the modern lifestyle has
influenced has products such as washing machines as a utility item rather than
luxury goods. The factors such as rapid
urbanization, disposable income, increasing nuclear families, working women’s
and growth in per capita income of consumers will propel the washing machine
markets to grow. The greater varieties of choice are also forcing the urban
consumers to upgrade their semi-automatic machines to fully automatic ones. The
price difference between semi-automatic and fully automatic top loaders have
decreased to a greater extend and helps to increase in the sales.
