Mathematics is the study of topics such

as quantity structure, space and change. It is said that there are

many views that the mathematicians and philosophers about on the exact scope

and definition

of mathematics. Mathematics can be

essential in many fields; natural science, engineering, medicine,

finance and the social sciences. Mathematics can be dealing

with the science of structure, order, and relation that has

evolved from elemental practices of counting, measuring, and describing the shapes

of objects, logical reasoning and quantitative calculation, and its development

has involved an increasing degree of idealization and abstraction of its subject matter. In

mathematics you will found such different topics: algebra, trigonometry,

calculus, geometry, combinatorics, logic, number theory and many more.

Students consider Mathematics as a

difficult subject by which it takes patience and persistence also math is not something that

comes intuitively or automatically – it takes plenty of effort. According

to K. Abdul Gafoor & Abidha

Kurukkan study the main reasons for hating mathematics were difficulty in

understanding the subject, poor instruction and demand of more time to grasp,

but even after which they easily forget what is learnt.

Students

who easily give up on solving a simple mathematics problem are the one that is

not ready to take a risk in her/his life. Mathematics is like a life of

individuals, it consist of different problems but still it has always a

solution. In this research, the researcher choose the topic of fractions even

though there are lots of topics in Mathematics. Students will be able to

compute such Mathematical equation involving of fractions. The problem that the

student will solve, will be dealing with the basic operation of fractions;

adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fraction.

Students

should understand first what fraction is. Fraction is a

numerical quantity that is not whole number. It is also proportion of something.

Numerators and denominators are also used in fractions that are not common, including compound fractions,

complex fractions, and mixed numerals.

In a fraction, the number of equal parts

being described is the numerator

and the type or variety of the parts is the denominator. The numerator represents a number of equal parts, and

the denominator, which cannot be zero, indicates how many of those parts make

up a unit or a whole.

When it comes on solving fractions with

operation of addition, students should prioritize its function. The rule of

adding fraction is that the only like quantities can be added. Unlike

quantities must be converted to like quantities. Students should follow the

rule of it. In subtracting fraction is as same as that adding them; find a

common denominator, and change each fraction to an equivalent fraction with the

chosen common denominator. The resulting fraction will have that denominator,

and its numerator will be result of subtracting the numerator of the original

fractions.

To multiply fractions, multiply the

numerators and multiply its denominator. In also dividing fractions, divide the

fraction by a whole number, you may either divide the numerator, if it goes

evenly into the numerator, or multiply the denominator by the number.

Through this simple instructions, the

researcher are hoping that it will help those students that will be interested

with this research that they are conducting. The researchers are conducting a

research about the level of performance of grade 8 students in solving

fractions. With the use of questionnaires, the researcher will be able to know

their level of performance on the said field.

Upon conducting this research, the

researcher are assigned to use a quantitative research, so that the researcher

are able to know the percentage of those students that are being confused upon

solving it. Not just that but also study the reasons why the researchers have

that kind of answers or result. Upon this research design, the researcher will

get informed on how was their performance is.

The researchers are conducting such

research not just for our group to pass our project but to know the situation

of every students upon on our topic, know their capability that we are looking

for. After knowing the level of their performance the researchers are looking

for, the researcher will going to recommend something on them so that they will

be able to understand the fraction is. Also on the end of this research, the

researcher are hoping that this research would not help not just us, as the

researcher but also the students, teachers, and other reader that will going to

read our conducted research.
